Classes of Fire



The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has divided fires into four class, determinated by the materials or fuel being burned. Fire extinguisher are labelled as to which of the four class they are effective in controlling. Four fire class have been coded with either a letter or a standard pictogram shown to the below:
Class A fires : Class A fires result from the burning of ordinary cellulosic materials, such as wood and paper, and similiar natural and synthetic materials, like rubber and plastics. The solid residue of a class A fire consist Fires with common materials such as trash, wood, paper or most other combustible materials as the fuel source.
Class B fires : Fires with flammable or combustible liquids as a fuel source
Class C fires : Fires involving electrical equipment.
Class D fires : Fires with certain ignitable or combustible metals as a fuel source (usually found in industry)
